(Matthews stands outside of the room where Catoire is lying. He's fine, but he needs rest. The direct quote of the nurse. Matthews is playing with his rubix cube, not even looking at it. His mind is too occupied. The colors, the light, he can see it all now. No more need for his shades, or the blue waves that fly all around him. They've faded away but he can still see them. Just barely though. Matthews scans the room with his pale blue eyes. It really was great to see things again. Matthews sighs. He walks past Catoire's room.)
(Five hours later when the good doctor would wake up, he would see stale food beside his bed and a letter in Matthews's handwriting. The letter would tell him that the X-Men saved him, it would tell them that he was a decent man, and that things were already in motion to stop Smith. But most importantly, it would tell him the coordinates of the X-Men's mansion. It would also have a set of keys taped to the signature. The following day when Catoire would be released, he would find the Jaguar that Matthews had bought for him. He would find the money in the trunk that Matthews had left for him and the X-Men.)
(But that was later. Right now, Matthews walked down the sidewalk. His Magnum at his side, cube in his hands. He spotted a young boy. The boy's hands were gently rubbing the face of his seeing eye dog. The labrador looked up at Matthews. Matthews stopped and tapped the boy on the shoulder.)
Matthews: Hey kid, you blind?
Boy: Yes sir. I was born blind sir. This here's (rubs the lab's head) Jennings. He's my seeing eye dog.
Matthews: He's a beautiful animal.
Boy: Thank you sir.
(Matthews smiled and looked down again and then caught his breath. In his hands sat the rubix cube. It was finished. Every side was the right color, the full color. He had beat it. He could feel the stinging of tears behind his eyes, and blinked them back.)
Matthews: Here kid, take this.
(Matthews bent down and placed the cube in the boy's hand.)
Boy: What is it?
Matthews: It's a rubix cube. I want you to mess it up and then solve it. When you solve it, you will know exactly what you have to do in this life.
Boy: Are you sure you want to give this to me?
(But the boy was talking to no one. Matthews Johnson had disappeared into a crowd. The boy felt the cube in his hands and smiled. He started turning the cube and Jennings watched patiently.)
